2027 Annual Conference – February 22-25, 2026

Abstract Submittal Deadline: September 18, 2026


NWEA is seeking presentations for this coming year’s annual conference being held in Reno. Abstracts are typically 500 words or less. Presentations need to be approximately 50 minutes long and 10 minutes more for discussion questions. While most applicable abstracts will be considered, NWEA is looking for presentations covering the subject matter listed below:

  • 1) Wastewater:

    • a. Planning, Design, Construction and Funding subject matter tied to wastewater treatment

    • b. Recycle water, water reuse and long-term resource planning

    • c. Facility and Master planning

    • d. Challenges and/or lessons learned at all-sized wastewater systems

    • e. Treatment facility operational, maintenance, planning, design, and construction upgrades/improvements

    • f. Biological process improvements

    • g. Biosolids and side stream management

    • h. Rate setting, environmental, social, and governance equity

    • i. Energy conservation technologies or operating strategies to lower costs and reduce carbon footprint

    • j. Process control systems, instrumentation integration for enhanced process control, AI, machine learning, modeling, SCADA, digital twin, cyber security, and data analytics

    • k. The current state of the industry as it relates to individual wastewater unit operations (e.g., disinfection, thickening, secondary & tertiary treatment, etc.)

    • l. Facilities and equipment maintenance strategies or programs

    • m. Operational and maintenance optimization

  • 2) Pretreatment and Collection Systems:

    • a. Source control programs and local limits

    • b. Environmental surveillance

    • c. Sewer monitoring and sensing developments

    • d. Sewer, lift station, and force main design, technology, and innovation

    • e. Septic to sewer conversion

    • f. Regulatory permitting and code enforcement

    • g. Stormwater separation, capture and treatment

  • 3) Safety

  • 4) Associated Pilot projects

  • 5) Alternative Project Delivery Methods- Case Studies

  • 6) Asset Management Planning, Condition Assessments, and CMOM

  • 7) Water quality topics related to wastewater laboratory practices

  • 8) Public Utility Leadership and Environmental Social Governance (ESG) topics
