As we have seen from the COVID pandemic, response to an emerging disease requires coordination across different sectors at the federal, state, and local levels. These sectors include public health, healthcare, and emergency services, but also water and wastewater systems—which have played a unique health-related role during the pandemic by leading wastewater-based surveillance efforts to track SARS-CoV-2. Because emerging and re-emerging infectious disease threats are a feature of human life, it is important to understand the interdependency of these sectors so that we can build sustained, resilient, cross-sector partnerships to efficiently respond to, or even prevent, future outbreaks.
