The Importance of Corporate and Agency Support
NWEA has been very fortunate to enjoy strong support from both wastewater treatment agencies and consulting companies in the exercise of activities that support our mission of improving the water environment.
NWEA has had two corporate supporters, SPB Utility Services (SPB), and MWH Americas, Inc (MWH) who have, for the past two years, supported the organization’s ongoing activities through providing conference room space in northern Nevada (SPB) and southern Nevada (MWH) for our monthly board meetings, duplication services, free lunches, and support for our on-going telecommunications costs on their own budgets by providing toll-free dial-in conference calling services.
Other consulting firms, among them, Brown and Caldwell, Carollo Engineers, HDR Inc, CH2M-Hill and Kennedy-Jenks also encourage their employees to contribute to NWEA as officers and committee chairs, contribute corporate resources through sponsorships and provide in-kind support for their employees activities in NWEA and in WEF. Carollo partner Eric Leveque serves as NWEA’s WEF delegate and Carollo Associate Keli Callahan co-chairs the southern Nevada YP committee. Kennedy-Jenks Associate Candice Siwarga serves as YP chair in northern Nevada, and recently served as the YP Summit Sub-Committee chair for the YP Summit most recently held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and serves as a Stockholm Junior Water Prize judge in northern Nevada. CH2M-Hill associate Maria Stosich has served as a Stockholm Junior Water Prize science fair judge in southern Nevada. At Brown and Caldwell, Rob Davies, and before him, Mark Briggs, have served faithfully and effectively as NWEA’s newsletter editors and publishers.
On the public agency side, Clark, Douglas and Washoe counties, and the cities of Henderson, Incline Village, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Reno, Sparks and Winnemucca have provided meeting and training room spaces, paid for meals, allowed their employees to serve on our Executive and Certification Boards, and covered their travel, per diem, and accommodation costs to attend board meetings. Notable NWEA and WEF officers from public agencies include Rick Warner, Washoe County Dept of Water Resources, who has served in NWEA Officer positions, as NWEA’s WEF delegate, and now serves on the WEF Board of Trustees. From the Clark County Water Reclamation District, Bill Shepherd serves as Certification Board Chair. From Incline Village, Harvey Johnson serves as Certification Board Administrator. From Winemucca, Joe Crim serves as Certification Board Vice Chair. From Douglas County, and the cities of Henderson and Las Vegas, Kelvin Ikehara, Adrian Edwards, and John Solvie serve as Certification Board members. Bruce Dacko, from the City of Las Vegas, is serving as Tri-State Seminar (TSS) chair, and Jake Jacobson, CCWRD and Tom Rura, City of North Las Vegas, serve to organize TSS paper submissions, vendors and exhibitors. Stephen Long, from the City of Reno, serves as NWEA President, and from the City of Sparks, Gary Hutchinson serves as NWEA Treasurer, Starlin Jones serves as a WEF PWO representative and Suey Huey serves as NWEA’s Webmaster. The preceding list just scratches the surface of the broad and deep corporate and agency support that NWEA has enjoyed for many years, but I think is sufficient to amply demonstrate that NWEA could not function without the support of company and agency management that enables their employees to contribute their time, talent and treasure to our association.
